SUMMARY:Bandish Mehfil Series: An Evening of Raga\, Kharabat\, and Ghazal Traditions
DESCRIPTION:BANDISH MEHFIL SERIES at ECC:\nAn Evening of Raga\, Kharabat\, and Ghazal Traditions\nPresented by The Bandish Network \n  \nABOUT THE SHOW \nThe Bandish Mehfil Series offers an intimate musical gathering rooted in the timeless traditions of South and Central Asian classical music. In this special evening\, Afghan vocalist and composer Aqil Sharifi presents a program of raga\, Kharabat repertoire\, and Persian ghazals drawn from the rich musical heritage of Afghanistan. \n  \nAccompanied by the resonant tones of live violin by Varun Nair and the rhythmic dialogue of tabla by Hriday Buddhdev\, Sharifi’s expressive voice guides audiences through a tapestry of melody\, poetry\, and improvisation. His performance reflects a lineage that connects Afghan classical music with the wider Indo-Persian traditions\, where music becomes both storytelling and spiritual reflection. \n  \nRooted in poetic expression and refined classical training\, Sharifi’s interpretations reveal the emotional depth of Persian verse and the nuanced beauty of raga-based musical forms. In the close and immersive atmosphere of the mehfil setting\, audiences experience music as it has been shared for generations\, as a living conversation between artist\, tradition\, and listener. \n  \nThrough this curated series\, and as phone free sittings\, these intimate gatherings celebrate the enduring vitality of heritage arts\, creating space for artists and audiences to meet in a spirit of listening\, learning\, and cultural connection. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nAqil Sharifi is an Afghan singer\, composer\, and Persian-language poet whose work is rooted in the rich traditions of Afghan classical and ghazal music. SUMMARY:Rehearsal Hall Sessions: Hair Hair Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:HAIR HAIR EVERYWHERE\nA Semi-Staged Presentation\nBy Sarv Star \n\n \n\nABOUT THE SHOW\n\n\n\nHair Hair Everywhere is a bold and heartfelt multigenerational play about a young queer Persian femme exploring her relationship with body hair through the lenses of culture\, gender\, family\, and identity. Caught between personal desire and inherited beauty standards\, she begins a journey toward understanding and self-acceptance.\n \nGuided by her eyelash—mojeh—a gentle and mystical presence\, she enters a surreal world where her body hair begins to speak. One by one\, she hears her hair: her head hair\, armpit hair\, leg hair\, and pubic hair\, each representing a different part of her being.\n \nBlending traditional rituals with imagined ones\, the play creates a rich\, sensory landscape where healing\, storytelling\, and embodiment intertwine. Through these ritual spaces\, she not only learns to listen to herself\, but also begins to recognize the echoes of her maternal lineage within her.\n \nHer journey deepens when she meets a hairy ancestor from the 1800s\, connecting her to a lineage when hairiness was being desired and celebrated.\n \nWith humor\, vulnerability\, and imagination\, Hair Hair Everywhere invites audiences to reflect on their own relationships with their bodies. At its core\, it is a story of reclaiming power\, softening shame\, and building a deeper connection to self\, lineage\, and community.\n \n\n\n\n\nSINGLE TICKETS ON SALE:\nAdult $29 | Students/Senior: $19 \nAges 14 and up\n \nContent Warnings: personified body hair\, discussions of sex\, gender\, and the human body\nBOX OFFICE: 604.927.6555 | Open Monday – Saturday\, 12 – 5PM

SUMMARY:Music Series: Sultans of String
DESCRIPTION:SULTANS OF STRING: CHRISTMAS CARAVAN\n\n \n  \nABOUT THE SHOW \n\n3x JUNO nominees and 7x CFMA winners Sultans of String are an “energetic and exciting band with talent to burn!” (Maverick Magazine UK). Thrilling their audiences with their genre-hopping passport of Celtic reels\, flamenco\, Django-jazz\, Arabic and Cuban rhythms\, Sultans of String celebrate musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity. Fiery violin dances with rumba-flamenco guitar\, while bass and nyckelharpa lay down unstoppable grooves. Together acoustic strings meet electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound.\n \n \n \n\n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \n\n\n\nBandleader and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient Chris McKhool (Jesse Cook\, Pavlo) comes by global roots music through deep ties to his ancestry – his father’s name would have been pronounced Makhoul in ancestral Kfirmishki Lebanon\, and his Egyptian-born mother happened to play piano\, teach classical theory and feed her young son as much music instruction as she did Middle Eastern cuisine. From there\, the powerful violinist developed a taste for multi-genre string sounds and found a like-minded crew of all-world enthusiasts. When McKhool first heard the rumba rhythm of founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté (Jesse Cook)\, their musical synergy created Sultans of String’s signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. From this rich foundation\, the dynamic duo grew\, featuring such amazing musical friends as in the pocket bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk)\, singer to the stars Rebecca Campbell (Jane Siberry\, Parachute Club)\, and the virtuosic nyckelharpa playing of Saskia Tomkins (Celtic music consultant for the Broadway hit Come From Away). \n  \n  \nEqually at home in a concert hall\, music festival\, folk or jazz club\, the Sultans have gigged at JUNOfest\, the legendary club Birdland in New York\, Celtic Connections Festival (Glasgow) and London’s Trafalgar Square. Sultans of String have also collaborated with such diverse luminaries as Paddy Moloney & The Chieftains\, Sweet Honey in The Rock\, Richard Bona (Paul Simon)\, Alex Cuba\, Béla Fleck\, Crystal Shawanda and Ken Whiteley. \n\n\n\n \n  \n\nSINGLE TICKETS ON SALE!\nAdults: $50 | Seniors: $46 | Students: $19 \n  \nBOX OFFICE: 604.927.6555 | Open Monday – Saturday\, 12 – 5PM

SUMMARY:Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas: Between the Pages - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas: Between the Pages – Opening Reception \nSaturday\, December 5\, 5:30pm – 7:30pm  \nFree. Drop-ins welcome.    \nJoin the artist and curator on Saturday\, December 5th to celebrate the opening of Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas: Between the Pages at The Gallery at Evergreen Arts. Light refreshments will be served.  \n \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nMichael Nicoll Yahgulanaas’s art practice\, which spans five decades\, moves between literary\, performing and visual arts. In all these forms\, his work tells challenging stories that expand understandings of Haida culture\, relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities and how people impact their environment. Between the Pages explores how Haida Manga works in the space between cultures\, and how the tension and innovation in this intersection generates cross-cultural understanding.  \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a reading space for visitors of all ages. Settle into the gallery and discover the coloured worlds Yahgulanaas has created. The library features many of the artist’s acclaimed graphic novels\, such as The Lost Haida Manga: A Compendium (2026)\, JAJ: A Haida Manga (2023)\, The Little Hummingbird (2010)\, and Red: A Haida Manga (2009). Diving deeper into Yahgulanaas’s expansive process\, the exhibition also reveals never-before-seen studio materials that trace the development of the mural RED (2009) on loan from Museum of Anthropology and Clan Hat (2025) on loan from the Vancouver Art Gallery.   \nYahgulanaas’s unique art form\, Haida Manga\, blends North Pacific Indigenous visual language with the graphic dynamism of Asian comics. Spurred by the desire to unite oppositional forces and rooted in the artist’s history of activism\, Yahgulanaas developed his distinct visual language of Haida Manga. With this fusion art form\, he also celebrates the historical relationship between Coastal Indigenous Peoples on the Pacific Rim and the peoples of Asia. His work bridges cultures and storytelling traditions\, engaging audiences across generations.  \nSupported by Vancity

SUMMARY:Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas: Between the Pages Exhibition Tours
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Tours – Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas: Between the Pages \nFriday\, December 11 & Saturday\, January  9  at 1 PM   \nFree. Drop-in  \nJoin gallery staff for a free\, drop-in tour of Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas: Between the Pages.  \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nMichael Nicoll Yahgulanaas’s art practice\, which spans five decades\, moves between literary\, performing and visual arts. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nMichael Nicoll Yahgulanaas is an award-winning artist and author. His visual practice encompasses a variety of different art forms\, including large-scale public art projects\, mixed media sculptures\, painting\, ink drawings\, ceramics\, and illustrated publications. Exploring themes of cultural identity\, ecology\, and the barriers and openings in the human condition\, he uses art and speaking opportunities to communicate a world view that while particular to Haida Gwaii—his ancestral North Pacific archipelago—is also relevant to a contemporary and internationally-engaged audience. Influenced by both the tradition of Haida iconography and contemporary Asian visual culture\, Yahgulanaas has created a practice that is celebrated for its vitality\, relevancy\, and originality.  \nYahgulanaas’s work has appeared in public spaces\, museums\, galleries and private collections around the globe. Institutional collections include the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac\, Paris; British Museum\, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York; Seattle Art Museum; and Humboldt Forum\, Berlin. Most recently\, the Vancouver Art Gallery acquired Yahgulanaas’s 2025 Clan Hat mural\, on view as part of this exhibition at The Gallery at Evergreen Arts. Yahgulanaas is represented by Gallery Jones\, Vancouver and Madrona Gallery\, Victoria. www.mny.ca @yahgulanaas  \nSupported by Vancity
