Raised in Coquitlam\, British Columbia\, he began playing tabla at age four and later studied sarod under Ustad Alam Khan at the prestigious Ali Akbar College of Music in California. He continues his tabla training under the legendary Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri. A two-time recipient of the Advanced Instrumental Scholarship from AACM\, Hriday is one of only a handful of sarod artists in Canada. In 2023\, he delivered a lecture-demonstration at the VSO’s Day of Music\, engaging audiences with the dynamic interplay between rhythm and melody. No prior clay experience is needed; this workshop is about process\, intuition\, and the beauty of handmade imperfection.\n \n \nPerfect for art lovers\, beginners\, and anyone inspired by contemporary ceramic practices\, you’ll create a functional\, sculptural piece shaped by touch\, time\, and personal mark‑making. SUMMARY:Clay: What We Make of It
DESCRIPTION:ADULT CERAMICS: WHAT WE MAKE OF ITwith Educator Julie Epp\n  \nGet inspired by the contemporary art on view at the Gallery at Evergreen Arts and explore the endless possibilities of clay with artist Julie Epp. Begin with a guided tour and in-depth exploration of the exhibition\, where you’ll reflect on its themes\, emotions\, and artistic practices. Then\, return to the studio to create your own expressive ceramic artwork using hand-building techniques. \nGuided by Julie’s creative and reflective approach\, participants will experiment with form\, texture\, and imagination while learning foundational clay techniques. Discover how clay can be both expressive and functional\, shaped by your ideas and the stories you want to tell. Come ready to play\, learn\, and create something uniquely your own! \n  \nCLASS INFORMATION  \n5 Sessions to Choose From!  |  6:30 – 9:30PM$55/person per sessionAge 18+ \nApril 14: Karen Zalamea Mug ProjectParticipants will create a ceramic mug with decorative elements inspired by Karen Zalamea’s botanical cyanotype works currently on view in the gallery. This project will introduce surface design techniques\, including sgraffito and stencilling\, to explore pattern\, line\, and imagery.\n \nMay 5: Clay Marbling Surface Vessel/Tray Workshop\n\nInspired by surface\, line\, and intuition\n \n \nIn response to the evocative textures and layered mark‑making featured in the Karen Zalamea Gallery exhibition\, this hands‑on clay workshop invites participants to slow down and explore surface as a form of expression. Using marbled clay\, you’ll design and shape a one‑of‑a‑kind tray while experimenting with etching\, carving\, and subtle texturing techniques that echo the quiet dialogue between form and surface.\n \n \nOver three relaxed\, guided hours\, you’ll learn how contrasting clays create organic marbling patterns\, then personalize your piece through intentional marks; scratched lines\, impressions\, and tactile details that catch light and shadow. Finished works will be professionally kiln‑fired and ready for pickup within three weeks.\n \n \n\nJune 16: Lure Exhibition\nLure Exhibition Handbuilt Ceramics:Participants will design and build a functional hand‑built pottery piece inspired by Lure\, a group exhibition exploring the cultural\, social\, and material connections between fishing and daily life across Canada.
