The magic of the forest comes to life in the artwork Woodland. This series of whimsical and psychedelic images traces the four seasons across Lafarge Lake–Douglas SkyTrain Station. Since 2020, artist Sarah Anne Johnson has been documenting the forests around her home in Manitoba. She began this meditative practice early in the COVID-19 pandemic, as a way to find and share calm during uncertain times. She then transforms the photographs with Photoshop, paint, metal leaf, holographic tape and photo-spotting ink. The artist creates these images to more honestly reflect her personal experience with the landscape. Johnson takes inspiration from sacred architecture, studies of trees’ intelligence and her spiritual connection to the forest. In these works, the artist portrays what she calls the “healing power of the forest” through a kaleidoscope of colours. Her colour prisms bring to light unseen dimensions found within nature.

About The Artist
Sarah Anne Johnson lives and works in Winnipeg, MB. She holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art and a BFA from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg. Johnson’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally, including at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and Confederation Centre of the Arts, Charlottetown, PEI. She is the recipient of many grants and awards and her work is included in several distinguished collections, such as the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and Vancouver Art Gallery. Johnson is represented by Yossi Milo Gallery, New York; Stephen Bulger Gallery, Toronto; and Division Gallery, Montreal.
