Volunteer with Evergreen

Our volunteers are the heart of our organization, and can be found in the theatre, art gallery, creative studios, and even at community festivals. We are always looking for kind and creative people aged 16+ to join our awesome team.

With more than 50 Performing Arts events every season, a curated art gallery, school workshops, seasonal arts camps and classes, and a full calendar of rental events throughout the year, Team Evergreen’s volunteers play a crucial role in bringing our performing + visual arts programming to life.

We’re always looking for positive, art-minded people from all walks of life to join our team, and we are committed to promoting a safe, accessible, and inclusive community of volunteers.

Volunteer Positions

Performances + Events

Shifts are typically 3.5 hours long, but can vary depending on the needs of the event

Coat Check

The primary role of a Coat Check volunteer is to manage and retrieve non-valuables items stored in the coat check while providing courteous and professional service. Coat Check volunteers are friendly and customer-focused. They work during performances and rental events that are scheduled in the Studio Theatre and ensure all checked-in items are cared for during the event.

Ushers

Ushers collect tickets, greet our audiences, hand-out brochures, ensure theatre etiquette and safety regulations are being followed, and help monitor Front of House activities. Ushers have great customer service skills and play an important role as the first point of contact person entering the lobby and Studio Theatre. They may also be asked to help with cleaning up after a performance or event.

Concession

Concession volunteers MUST have a valid Serving it Right Certification and be 19 + years of age. Concession volunteers are organized and efficient in a fast-paced environment, handling payment or serving beverages and pre-packaged snacks to our audiences before the curtain call and during intermission periods. These volunteers are scheduled to work during theatre performances,  gallery receptions, and rental events. These volunteers usually work in pairs and have serving experience.

Merchandise

Our Volunteers may be asked to sell merchandise when artists and performers have items like CDs or T-Shirts available for purchase. This is a great position for those with an outgoing personality!

Gallery Greeters

Gallery Greeters work during events & performances in the Studio Theatre to invite theatre-going guests in the lobby to check out the art gallery. Gallery Greeters welcome patrons into the gallery space, provide information on the exhibition, monitor gallery attendance, and ensure patrons follow gallery etiquette. Gallery Greeters are friendly by nature and enjoy working with the public.

Volunteer Positions

Exhibitions + Gallery Events

Shifts are scheduled during the following times: 

Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays: 12PM – 2:30PM | 2:30PM – 5PM

Depending on gallery staffing needs, there may be shifts available on Thursdays and Fridays.

Gallery Ambassadors (Standard Program)

Gallery Ambassadors are scheduled during our regular Art Gallery hours. These volunteers like working with the public and are not shy about sharing information about gallery related events and exhibitions. Volunteers monitor visitor attendance, ensure visitors follow gallery etiquette, and occasionally help with other tasks. This position is well suited to students & those interested in contemporary art exhibitions. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of two (2) shifts a month.

Gallery Ambassadors (High School Program)

Are you a high school student who loves art, enjoys meeting new people, and wants to earn volunteer hours in a creative environment? Gallery Ambassadors welcome visitors to our exhibitions during public hours. You will help visitors feel comfortable exploring the gallery space and support the staff during public programs and events. This is a great opportunity to develop communication skills and guest services skills in a professional arts setting.

Arts Education

School Workshop Assistants

Perfect for volunteers who love working with children, or in a fast-paced, artistic environment. Our Arts Education workshops are booked by teachers with an interest in exposing their students to art–making in our studio spaces and a guided gallery tour. Workshop assistants are energetic, outgoing, have great listening skills, and work well in a team environment. They will assist with studio set-up, help facilitate group management, hands-on activities, distribute supplies and help with clean-up, and should have some interest in visual arts education.

Family Days Workshop Assistants

Shifts are scheduled during the event at the following times:
11:30AM – 1:30PM | 1:30PM – 4PM

Visual Arts Workshop Assistants

Volunteers for Adult Art Workshops and other various events programmed by our Visual Arts Department help with assembling/prepping materials, and other duties. This position is ideal for volunteers who can only commit to one–day events throughout the year.

Seasonal + Special Event Volunteer Positions

Arts Camp Volunteer

Our Arts Camp Volunteers make camp a rewarding experience for campers, during both the spring and summer months. They assist staff in break-time activities, help guide campers through performance scenes, and facilitate hands-on art projects. Ideally, Arts Camps Volunteers volunteer for a full week of camps to provide consistency for the campers. However, if you cannot commit to this, we strongly encourage you to still apply!

Hybrid Arts Camps shifts during Spring Break (March), and July-August

Arts Camp shifts are scheduled during the following times:

Monday – Friday during camp hours:
8:30AM – 12:30PM | 12PM – 4:30PM

Outreach + Community Event Assistant

Our Outreach + Community Event volunteers work alongside our Evergreen Staff at one-day special events like Canada Day, Lights at Lafarge, The Teddy Bear Picnic, and more. They help with set-up, take-down, and hands-on activities, as well as assist with sharing information about the Evergreen. Occasionally, volunteers are recruited from our active volunteer list for these events, but we also have room for new applicants.

Steps to Becoming a Volunteer

1. Apply to join our team

Fill out an online application and our Volunteer Coordinator will get in touch with you. To volunteer, you must be 16 years of age or older.

2. Have an interview

Once your application is received, our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to schedule an in-person or virtual interview to learn more about you and discuss what position you are interested in.

3. Screening and Reference Checks

After your interview, approved applicants will be asked to complete a Criminal Records Check.

What will I get out of Volunteering?

Evergreen wouldn’t be half the arts centre it is without our hardworking team of volunteers. As a non-profit, our volunteers are the core of our organization, and help us bring the best arts experiences + education we can to the Tri-Cities, while keeping our space open, inclusive, and accessible to everyone.

When can I apply to volunteer?

You can apply to volunteer anytime! We are always busy during our annual season of events (September to June) and rely on our volunteers to support our performing and visual arts events. 

Interested in volunteering specifically for our seasonal arts camps? Apply in January (for Spring Break) and April (for Summer Camps).

How many hours are volunteers required to give?

Arts Education volunteers, Gallery volunteers, and Front of House volunteers are asked to sign-up for at least two shifts a month. Each position has pre-scheduled shift times. Please see our Volunteer Positions page for more information. 

Can I fill out a paper application?

Sure! If you’d prefer to apply the old fashioned way, please phone our Volunteer Coordinator at 604-927-6561, or email ac.ertneclarutlucneergreve@reetnulov to arrange to fill out a paper application.

I applied to volunteer! When will I hear back?

Once our Volunteer Coordinator has received your volunteer application, you should hear back from them in a week’s time (7 business days). Then they will inform you of the next steps to take.

How long does it take to become a volunteer?

The length of time between your in-person interview and your first shift (this is referred to as the screening process) can vary depending on which position you’ve applied for and our event schedule. It can take as little as two weeks or up to 2 months from your first connection with our Volunteer Coordinator to your first shift.
